Awe-inspiring VR experience: Almost leaves you breathless

Tracey Grey, who synchronizes the voice of Lt. Saynab Azouad in Space Rift - Episode 1 has played video games herself. But Space Rift - Episode 1 was different for her: a really impressive experience. She felt a certain kind of reverence and it left her breathless the moment she immersed herself in the virtual reality of Space Rift - Episode 1 for the first time. Especially, because it really feels like you become part of the whole universe. As a result, the work as a voice actor becomes a real intimate and focused task. For instance, the director or the audio engineer note if the voice needs to create a certain mood or should rather scale back. As a voice artist you need to react as naturally as possible to the voices and actions of the other characters - spontaneously! The spectrum includes “annoyed”, “irritated”, “caring” right up to “panic-fueled”. If the exact intonation - fitting the role - gets hit by doing so, Grey is really satisfied with this work.

The VR aspect really adds another dimension to video games

Being a trained actor, it is obvious that Susan Tackenberg (Dr. Vanessa Eiken) enjoys the challenge of working on Space Rift - Episode 1. According to her, the main difference compared to TV recordings is that games are not always linear! So you always have to keep in mind the character progression that happens in the course of the story. It is exactly this challenge that is great fun for her and it comes naturally to her to be able to adapt herself to various kinds of situations. She confirms that the VR aspect adds another dimension to video games.

Voices in 3D?

Working on a VR game is also a whole new experience for the sound engineer, Wolfang Zarges, since you get a different impressions of the game environment and the characters. If he could, he would preferably record the voices in 3D as well. He is, above all,  glad about Space Rift - Episode 1 being a story-driven game. So he doesn’t need to record screams all day, but really genuine and well-written dialogues. Moreover, also thanks to the well-made voice recordings, the developers of Space Rift - Episode 1 succeeded in creating such an immersive game world including a thrilling narrative and such detailed characters. Space Rift: A complete VR experience

Space Rift is specifically designed and optimized for VR headsets such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Gear VR und PlayStation VR. The cinematic story paired with the gameplay and level design is what makes Space Rift unique in this regard. Space Rift thrills players with a movie-like atmosphere, which reveals itself in the scripted missions and dozens of dialogues with detailed characters. Unlike other VR mini games and tech demos, which have been released for VR so far, Space Rift is a complete game experience.

About Space Rift: The player will become part of the story

Earth has been devastated entirely by a destructive meteor shower, thus forcing humanity to emigrate to Mars. Humans were enslaved by the organizations WEYSS and PANDORA and carve out a miserable existence on the xeric red planet. Players slip into the role of the veteran pilot Casey, who takes on the hostile organizations in order to liberate humankind from their suffering on Mars. Radio transmissions, newscasts and the interaction with the fondly designed non-player characters on the base station continuously add new thrilling details about the on-going conflict and also reveal pieces of background information.

Real cockpit feeling in outer space

The combination with Virtual Reality leads Space Rift to provide a unique and immersive gaming experience. This motivates the player to advance the story autonomously and to put together newly revealed pieces in the puzzle. Concurrently, the space ship evolves into being the player’s favorite companion - not only in connection with the quest to free humankind, but also in the course of exploring the whole galaxy. The particular segments of the playable outer space were designed individually by the level designers and therefore offer a vast amount of variety - also thanks to impressive visual effects.

Space Rift is available for all major VR headsets applicable for PC at a price of USD/EUR 19.99 (GBP 14.99): namely via Steam and the Humble Store. The Android GEAR-VR version of Space Rift will also be released in summer 2016 and the PlayStation VR version is planned for fall 2016.

Further impressions can be taken out of the official Gameplay- and Mixed Reality-Trailer. A 9-part making-of documentary is also available and will be released weekly.
